Style & Character
34 B has modernistic French décor with an underlying theme of care freeness and joy. You will see cheery wall arts, stripes on bed linen and occasional bursts of color on what is predominantly a grey, white and ash theme.
The passage leading from the elevator goes overboard in its décor as they are all covered in strange red and blue stripes and the doors have targets in the same color theme with the room number. However the rooms are intriguing with headboards comprising of soft toys and glass topped desks flanking quirky imagery.
The 34b is part of the Astotel group that owns and operates more than 10 properties in Paris and several others all across the world. The ambience is modern, clean and friendly with a more cheerful attitude than one usually encounters in a Parisian 3 star hotel.
Rooms
There are 128 Rooms divided into standard single, standard twin, superior double, superior twin, triple, duplex and family rooms. The family rooms have two standard rooms joined together and in each there are twin beds/ double bed and each room has its own bathroom and minibar. This is on the last floor of the building and there is private staircase access.
The duplex is smaller and has 4 twin beds or two twins and a king size bed. This is a 6 floored hotel and the rooms on the upper floors that look inwards unto the Glass Boulevard seem to be the most popular.
All rooms are conditioned (central) and have free Wi fi and direct phone lines. There are flat screen TV’s, desk with lamp and complimentary coffee/ tea trays. There is a choice between king sized/ double beds in double rooms and the superior rooms have large 180 x 200 cm super king beds. Rooms have a small attached balcony.
Bathrooms are equipped with modern fittings, toiletries, hair dryer and a bath/ shower. The downside for non-French speakers is the absence of adequate English channels on TV; there are only 4 or so.
Some of the room/ bathroom fittings may not work at times but once you notify the staff they are usually quick to take note and do the needful. Housekeeping make it a point to keep the rooms neat and clean and replenish the toiletries in the bathroom and the contents of the mini bar.
Amenities & Service
The lounge has an array of travel guide books and other literary collections. There is an iron and ironing board available for the use of guests and there is a luggage storage room. You can get your clothes dry cleaned at an applicable charge. Wi Fi is free all through-out the hotel and it works pretty well. Concierge service is available and there is room service too at fixed hours.
The staff is multilingual and all of them speak good English. They are quite friendly and accommodating and immediately note down complaints and try to fulfill special requests and instructions. On check in you will receive an Astotel card and a map of all the Astotels in Paris (there are about 10). You can enjoy complimentary beverages and snacks and relax for some time at any of them should you wish…this is one of the best things about choosing to stay in this chain.
The hotel is quite accommodating towards people with reduced mobility and the rooms and bathrooms have accessible features. The hotel is especially well suited for families who are looking for some privacy and a quiet place to stay. The family suite and the duplexes are in quiet locations and if you consider the maid service (at an extra cost) then you can almost call the place home…it can be that comfortable.
Baby cots are provided on request and kids up to the age of two can stay for free. This is a smoke free hotel and pets are not allowed inside. The kitchen is also accommodating towards people with dietary restrictions, diabetes, gluten intolerance etc.
Check in and check out times are 2.00 p.m. and 12.00 p.m. respectively
Food & Drinks
If you book directly through the hotel website then complimentary breakfast is provided every day. The breakfast spread is continental and wholesome; 4 to 5 varieties of each kind of breakfast items are provided. Expect a selection of French cheeses, cold sausages, juice, bread and cereal followed by potatoes, sausages, scrambled eggs and crepes along with coffee and tea. The hotel doesn’t have an in-house restaurant but post afternoon there is a steady and free supply of snacks and nonalcoholic beverages in the open bar in the lounge area.
The absence of an in house restaurant won’t bother you much as you can basically get any kind of cuisine around the hotel within walking distances. Les Diables au Thym on Rue Bergere and Trattoria l’Oca Nera (same location) serve good French and Italian food respectively. On the same street is Bein with Thai food and then there is Kim Seoul on Rue Fauborg that serves pan Asian cuisine.
Also on Fauborg road is Nicks Pizza and Medi Terra Nea that serves Mediterranean food while Matsusaka on Rue de Montynon serves good quality Japanese food. For good sushi try SuMiBi Kaz on Rue Montyon and for fine steaks Loco on Rue du Fauborg are recommended. For a sophisticated meal try L’Astrance near Trocadero and the Alain Ducasse au Plaza (inside Plaza Athenee hotel).
There are quite a few amazing pubs and bars nearby. The O Sullivan’s Grands Boulevard, Edward and Sons, Frog & Underground, The Cork and Cavan, King George and Café Oz Grands Boulevards, Balrock and Cross of St George Pub are some of the popular options.
